This does not just happen in Thailand or Asia it is going on world wide. Women of all countries are searching for American or Foregin husbands. As the film shows it deffinetily impacts the ecconomic standing of the woman marrying the foreigner, and to a varying extent, her family. The problem with these types of online services is that many of them are scams so men get suckered into sending women money who the man thinks is serious about a relationship with him.
Another problem that exists is the visa requirements for a foreign wife to marry a man and to be able to return to his native country, with citizenship, are gone or never were there so it is easier for the married couple to live in the country of the wife than the husband.
At one time "War Brides" of American soldiers were given America Citizenship but not any longer. A foregin woman must now apply for an Fiancee Visa after proving she and the man have had a relationship and she is serious about marriage. Of course once they are married for a couple of years she can divorce him, have her citizenship and half his property. In some countires, Costa Rica is one, if a foregin man marries a native woman all his property goes to her when he dies no matter what his will or trust say. So you can be sure I'll never marry a woman in Costa Rica.
Men are made fools of and suckered by woman all the time and men sucker women just as often.
