Has anyone ever experienced a sting before? If so, how did you know it was a sting, and what advice can you give for getting out of it? I once heard a story about a sting where the officer asked the provider questions about money upon arriving. The provider simply said that he must have her confused with someone else and he left.

i got caught up in a sting operation about a year and a half ago...i still get worked up about it because i felt i was set up..there are no entrapment laws in the state of indiana..i work as an independent escort and can be found only on the internet..i was reading a book when i got the call..there were two guys who wanted outcall..i told them my donation for one hour and nothing else was said to incriminate me..i never agree to exchange anything for money and make it clear they are paying for my time and companionship...i arrived at the hotel and talked to them for 20 minutes..i then told them i give backrubs..not massages...one left the room and 2 minutes later there was a knock on the door..the guy opened it and it was police saying there had been complaints about this room..possible drugs and prostitution..they arrested me for solicitation..when i was booked, another woman was sitting in lockup..she had just been arrested one hour before me same hotel same room...i was going to fight it but plead guilty and did 15 days in jail..it was over and done and no probation bullshit...i still get angry because i did not solicit anyone..they called me..i was not walking a ho stroll, not approaching anyone in bars..i was minding my own business..the laws need to be changed and furthermore, not decriminalized but regulated like any business..we should take a look at canada's laws..and follow their example..meg

Thank-you for sharing. I know it must have been a painful and traumatic experience.

The most important learnings for me are:

1. Solicitation is the main legal pitfall
Solicitation is a gray area because you must also avoid the "appearance" of solicitation. We all know about explicitly talking about sex for money, but in the US you can also be charged if you "imply" or "appear" to be offering sex for money. The principle in law is if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck ... its a duck, no matter what you call it.

Its hypocritical of course, but LE can solicit an escort (ask what it costs for sex). If an escort participates in the "negotiation", she can (will) be charged. So hobbyists need to appreciate why escorts will not talk explicitly or implicitly about services other than time and companionship.

2. Invoke your right to be silent (Fifth Amendment) if you are taken into custody
If you are charged with solicitation and taken into custody, invoke your Miranda rights - the right to remain silent and the right to have an attorney present. To determine if you are in custody, ask if you are free to leave. If the answer is no --- you are in custody. Always, always remember that anything you say in the presence of LE may be used as evidence against you! But also remember that the prosecution has to make the case, there's nothing that says you have to make it easy for him.

Any sting operation will be set up to gather evidence. So there will be more that one undercover LE officer (to corroborate testimony) and probably video and audio recording. Otherwise its a he said/she said situation, and the court would decide who is more credible. That is why an escort is always careful about what she says or does. In other words, she acts as if the hobbyist in front of her were undercover LE.

As an escort, your defense is that there is reasonable doubt that you committed the offense of solicitation (that you did not initiate or participate in sexual commerce). If the case against you is weak, then the charges may be dropped because the prosecution has easier "slam dunk" cases to try.

I was watching a show called manswers on spike tv,it was on late night and they had a segment about Prostitution and how not to get caught. The person on the show who worked for the US District Attorney stated that to avoid prosecution or getting arrested is to ask them if they would pose for pictures but not to say the word nude. If they say no chances are that they LE and if they say yes and they are LE then they can be charged for the same crime. due to the fact that the evidence is on tape. But I do not know for sure if this is accurate or not.

Hypothetical - dubious. Practically --- I don't think so. This falls in the category of asking someone if they are LE. Besides, there's nothing to prevent LE from lying or destroying evidence. Who's going to charge and arrest the LE officer ... their partner?

The only thing I offer is "a date". No specifics are mentioned I won't discuss what I provide only the length of the date. When the time is up then if I feel everything is OK then I will tell him I had a nice time and ask him if he'd like a BJ before he leaves.

When I was a teenager though I did make a mistake and got busted for prostitution. However I managed to get out of it when the cop went to take me home and I was spending the summer with a friend and her mom was a Callgirl whom the cop who busted me frequented. When it was over I got my 25 bucks and the cop got a BJ from a teenage schoolgirl. After that my friend's mom started booking my "dates'' and took me from being a "street Ho" to a Callgirl.

Thanks for the valuable information. I enjoy the thrills of being an escort. For the most part my regular clientele are more like friends. On the other hand, I have a career in the healthcare field that I enjoy too. My worst fear is getting busted for prostitution; it would ruin my life. I believe that establishing a group of regular clients has helped me minimize the number of new "meet and greet" and potential stings.

Has anyone had a relationship with a “regular” client go sour and feel that the client may have caused a set-up? If so, any advice on avoiding that situation. Once again, thanks for sharing your experiences.

I had a simular situation happen to me. I have NEVER in my life been in any trouble at all not even a driving ticket. The guy calls me and gives a name which I searched for on the internet. Well needless to say he gave me a wrong name. There were so many "red" flags I should have had seen them! Anyway he kept texting and then all the sudden there was a knock at the door and he said I am a police officer and you are under arrest. He really tried hard to get me to take the cash from his hand and I would not do it. So instead he got me for a lewd act. I wish there was something that could be done becasue so many people think that if you ask them if they are a cop they have to be honest with you and in actuallity they dont! :-( SAD!

When i was in Malaysia, somebody calls me and wanted to have a short time date in his house,he picks me up near my hotel,I dont have idea that he was a cop,he was dressed like a civillian, during that time i was with my friend who also doing an escort,i convinced my friend to go with me and she said yes..Then this client wanted me and my friend to go with him so we agreed both..While we were on the car,he always asking questions about our works and discuss the details about escorting, and its because we trusted him,so whatever he ask we also give an answer, not knowing he already record everything that we discuss on inside his car,And its because we are new to that country,we dont have an idea that he takes us in the Police station, then he tells us that he had an evidence that we work illegal in his country,my friend and i was so nervous during that time, then i saw his gun and he said that anyone who gets out the car will be dead..so we ask him,if we can give him all the money we had and released us,at first he dont want but luckily after 1 hour convincing him,he agreed to get my money and my digi cam and released us and drop us in the street of kuala lumpur..Thats why this time I should becareful of what I say and more safe if you dont discuss what you have provide coz you might never know he will record it and make it evidence against you..

A Sweet Whisper
A Sweet Whisper
I got caught up once but did not get arrested. I figured out something was wrong because he was at a hotel claiming to be visiting from another county and he said he drove his car down to the hotel near me but when I got to the hotel none of the cars had tags from the county he said he was from, in florida the county you live in is on your plate or used to be, and he wouldn't give me a contact number I was to go to the front desk and have them tell him I was there. So I got a bad feeling when the front desk guy told me they did not have phones in the rooms. I went to get in my car and leave I didn't go to the room but he saw me and followed me to my car and tried to talk me into going into the room. I refused and he knocked on the trunk of a car and 3 vice cops jumped out of the bushes. I hadn't done or said anything so all they could do was ticket me for operating without an occupational license. That was scary. I didn't say a word and denied having knowledge of what they were talking about. I am very careful about what I say and also if I get a bad feeling I go with it and leave. Educate yourself on the laws and ordinances. Know your rights and know when to stay quiet. Be safe
