Jogging pilgrim stuns motorists Thu Apr 17, 12:21 PM ET

Police in Germany were shocked to find a man running down a major highway pulling a three-wheeled trailer -- but even more surprised to learn he was a Polish pilgrim on a 3,000 km (1,800 mile) trek.

Motorists near Coburg in Bavaria saw the man towing a load with a rod attached to his back and called police.

"Officers' initial astonishment quickly turned into admiration," a police statement said on Tuesday.

After questioning the man, police discovered he was a devout Roman Catholic Pole on his way home from a European pilgrimage that had taken him as far as Portugal.

Inside a converted roof luggage box, which also served as a bivouac, the 35-year-old was carrying all he needed for the journey, police said. After inspecting the vehicle, officers declared it roadworthy and sent him on his way.

Wow! That's something to think about. That would be something to see here in the US. Of course, it's a little more dangerous to be out on US highways though. Thanks paul for this post.

Very good solution. The rucksack is not bottomless! But it would be even more perfect if his trike was also motorized, like a personal small cultivator with two handles. There would be no canonbreaking.

I think he was returning from Fatima, Portugal. It's one of the most sacred places for European piligrims.
I think it's an interesting question, it came suddenly to me:
are there any sacred Places for Catholic piligrims in the North America? Does anybody know?

It's quite a feat, I'll admit that. Many people in America ride bicycles for 125 miles a day on tours of the New England area. Bicycles are not allowed on freeways and many of the old highways are not maintained and many of them end in dead ends.
