Forum - Thinking Of Maybe Going Horseback Riding Sometime.

I have only tried horseback riding once in my lifetime; and that was when I was a child. I only tried it once then and was not on the horse for very long because of being scared as a child. I'm not scared of horses now and I think that they are beautiful animals. I was thinking of maybe trying to go horseback riding sometime this summer when I have some time. I think it may be so much fun.

I have ridden horse for years. Every time I go with some one who wants to go horse back riding I do so reluctanly, not because I'm afraid of the horse but the wrangler usually can tell I'm an experienced rider and will put me on the most difficult horse in the group.
I rode a horse at a gallop, along a beach, stopped it and then made it rear up all to the delight of a little boy and his mother.
I dismounted the horse and holding the reins walked up patted his neck while talkint to him in a soft voice telling him what a good bay he was and sctatched his head and ears.
The little boy came closer, with his mother, and I told my horse it was OK to just be calm and he let the llittle boy get with in 3 feet of him when I told the mother that was close enough.
Talk to the horse before you mount it and have a firm grip on the reigns so it knows you are in control. If it tries to bite you, while riding it, wait for it to try again and kick it in the neck. I know, that sounds cruel, but believe me, it won't hurt the horse. Especially if you're only wearing running shoes. If the horse starts to wander off the trail or tries to eat jeck sharply on the reins and get it back on the trail. They might not under stand the words but they understand the tone of voice.
Remember that horses are led by a dominiant mare, not a stalllion, and they will take their lead from her.
Be firm and you'll have a good ride. Do not be afraid of them because like any animal they can sense fear in a rider.

Hi 12pleaseu. i went horse riding, your very brave, only done it before as a child. went last year again, the horse was beautiful, but could tell i didnt know what i was doing. trouble was my friend did ride horses and even though she was really good at teaching, the horse was good at being bad, still had a good time. You enjoy yourself and have a nice time.

I also was afraid of horses when I was a child, first because of their loud neighing - not hugeness, and now I cannot feel myself with them as free as with many another creatures. But I agree that they are very beautiful and smart animals.

I have never known that mares are leaders between horses. Just like elephants! I like horses.

Thanks Paul for this information! It sounds like you have had more than your share of being on horses. That's a good thing though. I will have to somehow remember and maybe even write down some things to remember before going horse back riding. I am sure it will be a lot of fun once I get use to it. Thanks again sweetie.

Thanks Lady Panache. I loved horses as a child as well. When my cousin and I were children; her dad at the time owned a ranch and had a few horses. She rode horses all the time; and I wanted to try as well and I did ride on one at their ranch then. I just got scared at the time because the horse was making noises and it scared me. So, I got off; but yes, I did like it very much then. I think that I wanted to ride because my cousin was riding horses already at age 10 and I was 9 years old at the time. I will definately have a nice time when I do go. Thanks very much and I hope you have great times too!
