so what's with the preference for long hair? The researchers suggest there might be a stronger signal at work: Demanding time and energy for growth and grooming, long hair advertise both health and wealth.
I tend to prefer women with longer hair, but I'm not sure I go along with the theories above. Here are a couple of alternative ideas:
In most societies around the world, in recent generations, it's been customary for women to have long hair and men to have short hair. Could it be nothing more than social conditioning? Women with long hair tend to be seen as feminine, and women with short hair tending to come across as "butch"?
Alternatively, a short hairstyle tends to focus attention more on a woman's facial features, and any flaws become much more apparent. I have several friends who work in the hairdressing trade, and I often hear them make comments such as "you need a very pretty face to carry a [short] hairstyle like that." And of course, the vast majority of business in the hairdressing trade does not come from customers who have any real need for a haircut, it comes from people hoping to use their hair to enhance their attractiveness. The less hair you have, the less possibilities are open to you.
And I'm sure that's the main reason why so many men get hung up about going bald. There are plenty of role models around to make the point that bald/shaved men
can look sexy and attractive, but the reality is that it doesn't suit everyone ... and it's nice to have the choice!
