Amsterdam's War on Sex, Newsweek

quote Newsweek :
Amsterdam plans to close down its most famous district, citing sleaze, criminal activity and human trafficking. Not everybody is happy about it.

Arguing that too many brothels and sex bars are linked to criminality, the Amsterdam city government plans to all but erase the Red Light District. If the plan goes through, the peep shows, sex shops and prostitute windows that line the small alleys and canals will have to go, giving way to galleries, boutiques and upscale restaurants and bars. Goodbye to the big neon signs advertising every possible form of sexual indulgence.

Amsterdam without the Red Light District? Wouldn't that be like Paris without the Eiffel Tower?

Amsterdam’s mayor, Job Cohen, and his aldermen have demonstrated little nostalgia for the district, which has been the world’s most famous home of sexual permissiveness since the 15th century. They first unveiled the plan to close it in December; last month they revoked the licenses of two widely known sex venues, the Casa Rosso and the Banana Bar. The next step is to buy out the real estate owners. Last fall the city struck a deal with a powerful brothel owner, Charles Geerts (known as “Fat Charlie”), to buy 20 buildings.

A recent survey confirms the sentiment: the city administration’s polling agency found that 67 percent of Amsterdam’s population supports a clampdown on sketchy business. The Amsterdam City Council approved the plan about two weeks ago by an overwhelming 43-2 majority. And what about the ladies? For those that remain, the city administration may start certifying pimps and require that prostitutes who work for them to be 21 years old.

The crackdown fits into a nationwide backlash against the excesses of 1960s "happy-clappy" liberalism, as a conservative Dutch member of parliament recently put it. Over the last few years the Netherlands has adopted a stricter policy on selling marijuana, and a ban on hallucinogenic mushrooms is slated to go into effect later this year.

Thijs Niemantsverdriet, Feb 8, 2008

Seems like the pendulum has swung again from liberalism to conservatism. No sex, marijuana or mushrooms in Holland? I guess that bodes well for escorts in Thailand.

This article has received quite a bit of coverage in Europe, but comes across as being sensationalist and misleading. Comments from punters:

Newsweek article of last night...

Is the party over?

The reality is that one of the major players in the sex industry has been pressured into "voluntarily" selling his property in the area, which amounts to about a third of the shop windows in ONE of Amsterdam's Red Light Districts (RLDs). No one can predict the future with certainty, but prostitution remains legal in the Netherlands, and there are currently no stated plans to reduce the RLD further.

"The mayor denies wanting to rid Amsterdam of prostitution altogether – a move which would create enormous headaches for tourism authorities, as well as denting the city's revenues. But he is concerned the surfeit of sleaziness is turning the area into a mecca of drug dealing and petty crime. 'It is not about chasing prostitution out of the Wallen,' the mayor said. 'What we do want is to get rid of the underlying criminality.'"

What is not generally known is that there are two other RLDs in Amsterdam which are not in the least affected. Sure, they are smaller in scale, but being off the beaten (sex) tourist track, they are allegedly cheaper and more laid back than the main RLD in the Wallen. (Note: I have no first hand experience of this - a 10 minute encounter behind a screen in a shop window is NOT my style!).

It's also not generally known that most other major cities in the Netherlands have similar (smaller scale) RLDs, and some Belgian cities too. I didn't realise this myself until I took a train trip to Antwerp one day. As my train pulled out of Brussels North station, I casually glanced out of the window, and was amazed to get a close up view of a row of red-lit windows, with bored-looking women lazing around in their lingerie. Note for anyone planning a trip from Brussels to Antwerp: get a window seat on the right of the carriage on your departure from Brussels, and of course, a seat on your left as you return ;-)

I think many respectable Dutch citizens will take a long breath. Liberalism is liberalism - but criminality is criminality! If the first makes the second increase it needs some good and strict care.

And so much more benefit for internet escort providers... ;D

I know that criminality increases when the business is illegal.
Does it increase so much even where prostitution is fully legalised?...I can hardly believe it

A very funny and good analogy.
And drugs aren't a joke, that's it. As for me I keep myself drug free.

Psichdelics are not so addictive as heavy ones. I was strongly recommended NEVER taste heroin and opium but the acid is considered as not so dangerous.
