As I step out of the Airline Jetway it was a cloudy early morning in March 1991. I am only 18 years old traveling with a group of students on our Spring Break and my first time ever in the Philippines.
As I stand at the luggage area getting my 1 travel bag, I could try and peer outside whilst waiting anxiously for the courosel to bring out my bag. I was thinking if the courosel has a switch to turn faster. I finally made it to the immigration counter and as the immigration officer was checking my passport, I try to look over his shoulders peering outside as I was very eager to explore. I have heard many stories from many older fellow traveling gentlemen about the "good times" in Philippines so there was some sense of urgency to get out of the airport, go the hotel and go check out the scene. Little did I knew then that "good times" starts as soon as the sun set over the horizon over the Philippine sea. The rest of the day was just sitting at hotel bored and I eventually decided to go the mall and check it out.
WOW! That was all I could manage to think as I was strolling in a sea of people, you could actually see the currents of people moving in one direction and others going in the opposite direction. If you wanted to go somewhere you have to go with the flow. Otherwise if you accidentally walk into or against the current, it was a challenge as you are hit by wall after wall of people so you have to turn around and walk in sync and with good timing get out and switch to the other traffic. With so many people around, I found a quiet corner in a cafe where I sat had a cup of mocha and just gazed toward the swarm of bodies moving and that's when I finally realized.
"DAMN!" I mumbled in a whispered voice as I take a sip of my sweet concoction. From the multitude, I saw in every direction there were
many beautiful women my eyes could behold. I was awestruck with so many lovelies walking around alone or with group of friends, I tried to count how many I could see before I finish my drink but past number ten and I lost count. I decided then, I have to go out tonight.
It's 10pm, I just finished the last movie at the mall and going back to the hotel when a thought came to my mind, "go out and have fun" a voice said so I hailed a cab. It's my first time and my first evening, "Where should I go?" I thought to myself, when i happen to see a japanese gentleman, I figure he was tourist. So in my broken japanese managed to ask the gentlemen where is a good place for a drink, he looked at me and said something in Japanese which when i put the words together, meant something like "aren't you a bit young?" I like to point out that when ever there are two guys from different nationality, background and what not come together and say "Women, can't live with them, can't live without them!" You've got a friend. The Japanese Tourist was kind enough to point me to a place called, Miss Universe.. I don't know if today it still called that, but the Japanese Gentleman took me there. He took me in and he went to talk to Mamasang for a moment and he returned back to my table and told me that he is tired and going home. I thanked him and offered to pay his taxi fare back to his hotel, but he refused and told me to have a good time.
Sitting at a table, just off to the side of the stage-close enough to see the ladies dancing but far enough little behind the dark shadows so I was able to relax. I ordered a mixed drink and after that tried the freshest local beer of San Miquel when Mamasang appeared with a bottle of Chivas and a stunning looking girl probably 21 yrs or 22 yrs following her. I told Mamasang, I did not order any bottle of Chivas and I was not ready to be accompanied by a lady yet. She smiled and said, "Your Japanese Papa-san, bought you two bottles of chivas and this lovely lady has been selected by him for you! And he say to have a good time". I was stunned.
