Recently, I've been viewing advertisements of Male Escort agencies on chat servers, google search and other such places, which are regularly visited by many. Lets take a look at one of those ads...

For the first time, when I came across such an ad, I was excited and wanted to get into it. But only one thing did bother me (and I think, every one will feel the same), the security deposit!!!! I have read many ads from different Male/Female Escort Agencies from Europe and USA; I don't remember any of them asking their escorts to pay security deposit. I know an Escort in USA and she also assured me that no agency asks for up-front fees. And then it dawned upon me that a new kind of scam is ON.
It is similar to the 419/Nigerian scam. Only the bait has changed here. Many boys in India are willing to be Escorts (for fun mostly). Paying 1000 or 2000 rupees is not a big deal for many of them. Such guys are trapped by these scammers and are exploited. I met one of those poor fellows (I truly feel bad for him!).
JIM(name changed) was chatting on a chat server with some Gigalo/Callboy ID. He got an instant message (IM), where the writer claimed to be the owner of Male Escort Agency. This fellow Jim, all set to become an Escort, immediately asked him to help and make him an escort. He got a simple reply that if he pays Rs. 3000/- into a certain bank account, he'll make him an Escort and he'll get to sleep with high-class girls, air hostesses and business women and women from Middle-east, South-east countries. Without thinking, Jim went to the bank and deposited Rs. 3000/- into that account. Then went home and started dreaming of his carrer as an Escort. Nothing happened for 2 days, he got no call or no text message.
After waiting for 3 days, Jim called up the owner of that escort agency and demanded to know about his appointment. The owner- who must be too hardened criminal- simply told him that it was all fake and there was no agency or anything like that (Some of these people, either don't receive calls from the victim or after receiving they answer vaguely). Heart-broken Jim, returned home. And he hasn't done anything against those people yet!
When I heard his story, I told him to file a complaint against those people. He's the phone number, he's the bank account number; at least he can get back his money. But Jim is scared, he doesn't want to file a complaint because he thinks it'll darken his reputation in the society. He's worried about his family knowing that he wanted to be an escort. And the worst part of the story is, there are many thousand such Jimmys who've been exploited and are afraid to come ahead and tell their tales.
Another 419, right??? Well, the scammers are exploiting people using their emotions. These emotions are Want, Lust and the worst of all Fear! Jim wanted to an Escort because of Lust. Using these two emotions, the Scammer expolited Rs. 3000/- from him. And lastly, Jim can't file a complaint, because of his Fear.
I don't know if it is happening in other countries, but in India the number of escorts is far less than the number of such fake agencies. In fact, there's no genuine Male escort agency in India. My advice to all the wanna-be escorts is, not to pay attention to such advertisements. Don't fall prey to scammers.. Once you've become a victim, you become helpless.
If possible, we should start some kind of an Awareness campeign to prevent more people becoming victims of scams.
